Rotary – Building Peace

This past week, we heard from Chris Offer a celebrity within Rotary District 5040, who talked about Rotary’s Peace initiatives. Rotary has a long history of not only supporting, but building and initiating peace. He reminded us that there is a big difference between negative peace (absence of conflict) and positive peace (human rights, justice) and invited us to learn more about Rotary’s Peace Centres and to think about what we could be doing locally to build peace in our community.

• Rotary holds the highest consultative status offered to a nongovernmental organization by the UN’s Economic and Social Council, which oversees many specialized UN agencies
• you can see all 100 years of The Rotarian Magazine on Google Books, including many amazing stories of peace-building
• There is a Global Peace Index which outlines pillars of positive peace and evaluates nations based on their performance in each area
